My Unexpected Journey

“June 3, 2020, the day our world was shattered into a million pieces. The day we got the call no parent ever wants to get. It was about 7:45 am, and I was still in bed when I noticed three missed calls from a former co-worker. Because I had not spoken to her in a couple of years, I thought,
“How strange.” I later found out one of Max’s neighbors knew her and had called her to tell her about the emergency vehicles at Max’s house, and she was trying to alert me.”

So begins the nightmare no parent ever wants to face that author, speaker and Certified Grief Educator, Erin Blechman describes in her book, My Unexpected Journey, Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide. Erin does a wonderful job of describing the aftermath of such a catastrophic loss,  with candor and forthrightness. The feelings and thoughts that she shares in the days after her son Max’s death, makes the reader feel less alone and validated, because suicide brings up a unique set of emotions that are hard to express or explain to anyone who’s not experienced it.
